Credit Unions are community focussed not for profit organisations. Farming is an important sector but farmers have never associated Credit Unions with farm lending.

A group of four pioneering Credit Unions in Galway Cultivate set about changing this. Embarking on an ambitious project in 2016/17, they collaborated to develop and launch Cultivate. Similar projects, modelled on the Galway example have been successfully developed by groups of Credit Unions in Clare/West Limerick, North Cork, the Midlands and in Kerry/ West Cork. Today, a total of 26 Credit Unions offering farm loans under the Cultivate brand are members of a national structure called Collaborative Finance CLG.

A proven project development pathway model has been developed and fine-tuned over the past 4 years. In each region, a high-performance project management team has led the project from concept to launch.

Participating Credit Unions are today reaping the rewards of collaboration. In addition to serving their farmer members better, Credit Unions have also significantly grown their loan book. One of the big benefits of collaboration lies in strategic marketing. Today Cultivate has a dedicated marketing partner and is implementing an ambitious marketing plan.

Brendan Heneghan is the Project Manager of Cultivate.

Farming and Country Life 1916

Teagasc, the Agriculture Development Authority together with Galway County Council organised a major national commemoration event at the Teagasc Campus, Athenry on the 10th and 11th June 2016. The event formed part of the official Rising Commemoration and focussed on re-enacting life in rural Ireland 100 years ago.

Brendan Heneghan acted as project manager for the event. Organising this event posed a very different logistical challenge.
Key steps included:

- Commissioning of the project by Teagasc, Galway County Council and the national Commemoration group
- Engaging with the key stakeholders and scoping out the concept into seven thematic villages.
- Establishment of the project team, cocreation of the project, tasks and timelines
- Business Case – Budgets and Sponsorship
- Creation of a typical 1916 village
- Promotion and Marketing of the event
- Event Management plan for the 2-day event

The event was widely acclaimed.

People came from all over the country with over 50,000 people attending the 2-day event.
